Description

Ionisation cooling is one of the main ingredients of a Neutrino Factory -- a high-intensity, high-energy neutrino machine. The cooling channel of the CERN 44/88 MHz baseline design is discussed. A sensitivity study varying various parameters and beam conditions is performed in order to establish critical values. The question of how to compare different cooling scenarios is tackled by defining assessment criteria for the cooling performance. In the last chapter, "FASTCOOL", a small cooling experiment that would allow to observe ionisation cooling for the first time, is proposed.
