On Saturday, 19 September, ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano and Amalia Ercoli Finzi, Principal Investigator of the SD2 experiment on board the ESA Rosetta spacecraft, visited the AMS Control Centre and other CERN installations.

They were welcomed in the early morning by Sergio Bertolucci and then headed to the Prévessin site to visit the CERN Control Centre and the Payload and Operation Control Centre (POCC) of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). The Italian astronaut was able to visit the “Houston” of AMS, the experiment assembled at CERN and flown in July 2011 to the International Space Station, where he spent six months in 2013.
The group then moved to the CERN Computing Centre, where Amalia Ercoli Finzi encountered one of her former students, Alberto di Meglio, now a staff member in the IT department and Head of CERN Openlab. Before leaving, they had a short visit to IdeaSquare, where Luca Parmitano was given an introduction to the SR2S project, which aims to build a superconducting magnetic shield to protect astronauts from cosmic radiation.

Samedi 19 septembre, Luca Parmitano, astronaute à l’ESA, et Amalia Ercoli Finzi, scientifique responsable de l’expérience SD2, installée à bord de la sonde spatiale Rosetta de l’ESA, ont visité le centre de contrôle d’AMS et d’autres installations du CERN.
De gauche à droite : Sergio Bertolucci (directeur de la recherche et de l'informatique du CERN), Amalia Ercoli Finzi (professeure émérite au département d’aérospatiale de l’Université polytechnique de Milan et scientifique responsable de l’expérience SD2, installée à bord de la sonde spatiale Rosetta de l’ESA), Maurice Bourquin (chercheur expérimenté auprès d’AMS-02 et professeur honoraire au département de physique nucléaire et corpusculaire de l’Université de Genève) et Luca Parmitano (major dans l’armée de l’air italienne et astronaute de l'Agence spatiale européenne) au Centre de contrôle des opérations d’AMS.
Ils ont été accueillis tôt le matin par Sergio Bertolucci, et se sont ensuite dirigés vers le site de Prévessin pour visiter le Centre de contrôle du CERN et le Centre de contrôle des opérations du spectromètre magnétique Alpha (AMS), le POCC. L’astronaute italien a ainsi pu visiter le « Houston » d’AMS, l’expérience assemblée au CERN puis envoyée, en juillet 2011, vers la Station spatiale internationale, où il a passé six mois en 2013.
Le groupe a ensuite visité le Centre de calcul du CERN, où Amalia Ercoli Finzi a retrouvé l’un de ses anciens étudiants, Alberto di Meglio, qui est à présent membre du personnel du CERN, au département IT, et dirige le CERN Openlab. Avant de partir, ils ont encore visité IdeaSquare, où Luca Parmitano a pu découvrir le projet SR2S, qui a pour but de construire un bouclier magnétique supraconducteur afin de protéger les astronautes du rayonnement cosmique.
