Workplace safety: Let's ask the right questions

Since 2003, the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization have been organising an annual event on 28 April called “World Day for Safety and Health at Work.” This year, CERN is taking part for the first time with campaigns organised by the Safety Unit of the BE Department and by the HSE Unit.
The HSE Unit and the Safety Unit of the BE Department invite you to find out about everyday health and safety questions by visiting the stands they will be setting up at the entrances to the different restaurants at lunchtime on Thursday, 28 April. "This will be a chance to think about safety not just in the workplace but also at home and in the context of leisure activities,” explains Charles-Edouard Sala, who came up with the idea for CERN's participation in the event. “Safety is, first and foremost, a matter of personal awareness of and sensitivity to risks. That is why we in the Safety Unit had the idea for a campaign with the motto, 'Let’s ask the right questions.’” A simple questionnaire on safety will be distributed at the stands, and the best responses will be awardedprizes.
The HSE Unit is also fully involved in organising the day’s activities, producing posters and other information material about safety at CERN. Visits to the laboratory of HSE’s environmental service will be organised on the day, and a radioprotection monitoring system will be on display. “Our goal is to explain how safety is organised at CERN, both within the departments and at the level of the HSE Unit, and to describe what services HSE provides," explains the Unit’s Isabel Bejar Alonso.
Next Thursday, take a minute to stop and chat with the people at the HSE and BE stands. They will provide you with some good advice for improving your everyday safety. The names of the people submitting the fifteen best responses to the "Let’s ask the right questions" contest will be published in the Bulletin on 6 May.

Chaque 28 avril depuis 2003, l’Organisation internationale du travail et l’Organisation mondiale de la santé organisent la Journée mondiale sur la sécurité et la santé au travail. Pour la première fois cette année, le CERN marque cet évènement avec des initiatives coordonnées par la Safety Unit du département BE et l’unité HSE.
Le jeudi 28 avril, à l’heure du repas, l’unité HSE et la Safety Unit de BE vous accueilleront à l’entrée des différents restaurants avec des stands d’information pour vous sensibiliser sur le thème de la sécurité et de la santé au quotidien. « Ce sera l’occasion de réfléchir sur le niveau de sécurité au travail, mais aussi à la maison ou encore pendant vos loisirs, explique Charles-Edouard Sala, à l’origine du projet à travers lequel le CERN prend part à cet évènement. La sécurité est avant tout une question de sensibilité personnelle à la perception du danger. C’est pourquoi, au sein de la Safety Unit, nous avons eu l’idée de lancer l’initiative « Posons-nous les bonnes questions ! ». » Un questionnaire très simple sur ce sujet sera distribué aux stands ; les meilleures réponses seront récompensées.
L’unité HSE est, elle aussi, en première ligne dans l’organisation de la journée avec, notamment, la réalisation de posters et de matériel d’information sur la manière dont est structurée la sécurité au CERN. De plus, des visites du laboratoire du service Environnement de l'unité HSE seront proposées pendant toute la journée et un système de monitoring pour la radioprotection sera mis à disposition au stand. « Notre but est d’expliquer comment est organisée la sécurité au CERN, aussi bien au sein des départements que de l’unité HSE, et de décrire les services que fournit cette dernière », explique Isabel Bejar Alonso de l’unité HSE.
Jeudi prochain, n’oubliez pas de vous arrêter au stand de HSE et BE ; vous recevrez de bons tuyaux pour améliorer votre sécurité au quotidien. Les noms des 15 gagnants de l’initiative « posons nous les bonnes questions » seront publiés dans le Bulletin du 6 mai.
