The CERN Accelerator School (CAS) recently organised a specialised course on Superconductivity for Accelerators, held at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Italy from 24 April-4 May, 2013.
Following a handful of summary lectures on accelerator physics and the fundamental processes of superconductivity, the course covered a wide range of topics related to superconductivity and highlighted the latest developments in the field. Realistic case studies and topical seminars completed the programme.
The school was very successful with 94 participants representing 23 nationalities, coming from countries as far away as Belorussia, Canada, China, India, Japan and the United States (for the first time a young Ethiopian lady, studying in Germany, attended this course). The programme comprised 35 lectures, 3 seminars and 7 hours of case study. The case studies were pursued with great enthusiasm and produced some excellent results. Feedback from the participants was positive, reflecting the high standard of the lectures.
In addition to the academic programme, the participants had the opportunity to take part in a one-day excursion to visit the Museum of the Nave Punica in Marsala, and the Greek temple and Hellenistic theatre at Segesta.
The next CAS course will be held in Trondheim, Norway from 18-29 August, 2013 and will be at the advanced level. Further information on forthcoming CAS courses can be found on the CAS website.

L’École du CERN sur les accélérateurs (CAS) a organisé récemment un cours spécialisé sur la supraconductivité pour les accélérateurs, qui s’est déroulé à l’EMFCSC (Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture), à Erice (Italie), du 24 avril au 4 mai 2013.
Après quelques rappels sur la physique des accélérateurs et les processus fondamentaux de la supraconductivité, les cours ont abordé différents sujets liés à la supraconductivité et mis en avant les derniers développements dans ce domaine. Des études de cas concrètes et des séminaires thématiques étaient aussi au programme.
Cette école a remporté un franc succès, rassemblant 94 participants de 23 nationalités différentes, venant de pays aussi lointains que la Biélorussie, le Canada, la Chine, l’Inde, le Japon et les États-Unis. Une jeune Éthiopienne, étudiante en Allemagne, figurait également parmi les participants – une première. Au programme, 35 conférences, trois séminaires et sept heures d’études de cas. Les études de cas ont été menées avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme et ont donné d’excellents résultats. Les commentaires reçus ont été positifs, les participants saluant le haut niveau des conférences.
En marge du programme académique, les participants ont eu la possibilité de participer à une excursion d’une journée pour visiter le Musée des épaves puniques de Marsala, ainsi que le temple et le théâtre helléniques de Ségeste.
