Description

The different particle accelerators at CERN share their particles through transfer tunnels (TT). Inside the TT the particles are steered with electromagnetic fields through a vacuum chamber, that are controlled by 3 different kinds of magnets: Large Dipole, Small Dipole and Quadrupole magnets. Each of these magnets have a different effect on the beams while steering. The process of configuring all the magnets has to be done manually before each accelerator start and can take many iterations of error correction. Our goal with this research is to automate this initial configuration of the magnets. We believe this can be achieved by looking at historical data of the particle positions and the magnet configurations. We can then use Gaussian processes and Bayesian search theory to make predictions about the optimal magnet configuration. We get this data by using split foils using 2 sheets, one horizontally and one vertically, to measure the intensity of the beam and giving us a rough estimate where the beam is located.
