Preliminary cost estimate of the IDEA dual-readout calorimeter system

Description
The IDEA conceptual experiment (Innovative Detector for e+e−Accelerator) has been proposed in the context of the FCC-ee CDR [1]. IDEA is based on innovative technologies developed in recent years, which should allow the proto-experiment to match the detector requirements coming from the physics program. The baseline option for the IDEA calorimeter system consists of a longitudinally unsegmented sampling calorimeter exploiting the Dual-Readout (DR) technique [2]. On the other hand, heavy-flavour physics calls for a better energy resolution for electromagnetic showers, as good as 3 − 5%/√E, which may be achieved with a crystal section [3], again based on dual-readout technique, in front of the fibre calorimeter. This paper presents the current estimate of the cost for such calorimeter systems, both in the fully unsegmented option, described in Section 2, and in the combined crystal+fibre option, described in Section 3. Various options for cost-performance optimisation are also presented.
