SUMMER STUDENT PROJECT REPORT

Description

The main objective of my project was to study the influence of having a DLC layer in a single-sided segmented GEM with full holes in the insulating gap in terms of optical read-out signals. Then, compare the results with a non-DLC GEM with blank strip segmentation, random and full holes pattern to investigate if the DLC reduces the signal distortion or if the orientation of the DLC side has any influence on the results. For medical applications, it is important to reduce distortions in the borders when imaging objects. This effect plays an important role in experiments such as the triple-GEM tracking detector for COMPASS [1] where the border effect is also noticeable.
