Windows XP ends its life at CERN – register for Windows 7 training!

Windows XP has been around for over 10 years and it is now time to move on. At CERN, general support for Windows XP will end in December 2012, and before this date users are requested to schedule a migration to the next version of Windows – Windows 7.
Windows 7 is already well established at CERN – it is used by a large majority of users. In fact, there was a considerable user demand even before its official release in October 2009 and its adoption has been smooth. Users praise Windows 7 for its improved stability and a clear advantage on laptops is a much more efficient implementation of offline files.
The migration to Windows 7 involves a reinstallation of the operating system. Files stored in user home folders on DFS will be immediately available after the reinstallation. Applications will be upgraded to more recent versions and in certain cases, an application may even be replaced by another application providing the same functionality. Microsoft Office suite is a good example: the functionality of Office 2007 and SharePoint Designer 2007 on Windows XP is provided by Office 2010 and Expression Web 4 on Windows 7.
In general, these changes are intuitive, but as many elements change at the same time, users are advised to plan for a few hours of necessary adaptation and to avoid scheduling the migration during particularly busy moments.
In order to facilitate this transition, the IT-OIS group and the CERN Technical Training team are organising a series of training tutorials. Presentations in English are scheduled for 17 September and French presentations for 24 September. Participation is free, but users are invited to register in advance from the EDH Training catalogue or directly from: http://cern.ch/go/IT3T.
This end of support date of December 2012 concerns general office computers. Windows XP support for online computing in the LHC Controls and Experiments is scheduled to finish in December 2013.

Windows XP est présent depuis plus de dix ans, il est maintenant temps de passer à autre chose. Au CERN, le support général de Windows XP touchera à sa fin en décembre 2012. Avant cette date, les utilisateurs doivent planifier la migration vers la nouvelle version de Windows : Windows 7.
Windows 7 est déjà bien implanté au CERN – il est utilisé par la majorité des utilisateurs. En fait, il y a eu beaucoup de demandes en ce sens avant même sa sortie officielle en octobre 2009, et son adoption s’est faite en douceur.
Les utilisateurs plébiscitent Windows 7 pour sa stabilité améliorée et notamment pour sa meilleure gestion des fichiers hors connexion qui est un avantage clair sur les ordinateurs portables.
La migration vers Windows 7 implique une réinstallation du système d’exploitation. Les fichiers stockés dans le dossier personnel de l’utilisateur sur DFS seront immédiatement disponibles après la réinstallation. Les applications seront mises à jour vers des versions plus récentes et, dans certains cas, l’application peut être remplacée par un autre logiciel ayant les mêmes fonctionnalités. La suite Microsoft Office en est un bon exemple : on retrouve les possibilités de la version 2007 ainsi que de SharePoint Designer 2007 sur Windows XP dans la suite Office 2010 et Expression Web 4 sur Windows 7.
De manière générale ces changements sont intuitifs, cependant comme de nombreux éléments changent simultanément, les utilisateurs sont invités à prévoir quelques heures nécessaires à l’adaptation et à éviter de planifier la migration en période de rush.
Afin de faciliter la transition, le groupe IT-OIS et l’équipe de formation technique du CERN organisent une série de formations. Les présentations en anglais sont programmées le 17 septembre et les présentations en français auront lieu le 24 septembre.
La participation est libre, cependant les utilisateurs sont invités à s’inscrire au préalable depuis le catalogue de formations EDH ou directement sur : http://cern.ch/go/IT3T.
La date de fin du support de décembre 2012 concerne les stations de travail des bureaux uniquement. La fin du support de Windows XP pour les postes impliqués dans le contrôle du LHC et les expériences est programmée pour décembre 2013.
