Description

This report details some of the work I carried out as a part of my internship at CERN, in summer 2018. The project herein contributes to the larger study of the longevity of GEM detectors, which are to be inserted into the muon system of CMS during LS2, where the LHC will be upgraded to its high-luminosity phase. We investigate the phenomena of electrical discharge in the GEM detectors and possible ways of minimising their occurrence, such as through reducing the induction field. The preparation for a new single-hole GEM experiment is also presented, the techniques of building necessary components are discussed in detail.
