Description

In the present study the possibility of measuring the lifetime of the positively charged Kaon , K+, is investigated , by using data and framework produced by the experiment NA62 of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Even though this experiment does not have as main goal the measurement of this charged meson's lifetime, it is the experiment with the best production of this particle, and the aquiered data can be employed for other studies. The study was done by analyzing the 3 most common decay modes of the charged Kaon, corresponding to K+ → μ + ν, K+ → π+ π0 , and K+ → π+ π+ π−. For each of them data and Monte Carlo simulations, done by the colaboration, were used. With this, acceptance, similarity between experiment and simulation, and decay position distributions were obtained for each mode. Finally it is concluded that for the decay modes K+ → π+ π0 and K+ → π+ π +π−, obtaining the lifetime is unfeasible with the current resources; while for the decay mode K+ →μ+ + ν feasible results were obtained. To get improvements in the measurement results of the three decay modes, further studies are required to determine possible systematic errors in the Monte Carlo simulations.
