Search for charged-lepton-flavour violation in top-quark production and decay with the ATLAS experiment
Description
In the Standard Model of particle physics with massless neutrinos, charged lepton flavour is exactly conserved in weak interactions. Although the observation of neutrino oscillations establishes that lepton flavour is not a fundamental symmetry of nature, the corresponding rates for charged lepton flavour violating processes induced by non-zero neutrino masses are suppressed to an unobservable level. Consequently, the detection of charged lepton flavour violation in processes involving charged leptons would constitute unambiguous evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and provide direct insight into the flavour structure of new interactions.
This thesis presents a direct search for charged lepton flavour violation in top-quark processes using proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. The analysis targets two complementary production modes: top-quark pair production ($t\bar{t}$), where one top quark decays into an electron–muon pair and an up-type quark ($t \to e\mu q$), and single top-quark production in association with an electron–muon pair. In the $t\bar{t}$ channel, the event topology is defined by requiring the Standard Model $W$ boson from the second top quark to decay hadronically, thereby enhancing the sensitivity to the charged lepton flavour violating signature; an analogous hadronic requirement is imposed in the single top-quark case to suppress backgrounds.
Signal discrimination is achieved through the implementation of a multivariate classifier based on a boosted decision tree, optimised to exploit the kinematic and topological differences between signal and the dominant Standard Model backgrounds. A binned profile-likelihood fit to the discriminant distribution is performed to extract the signal strength, with systematic uncertainties incorporated as nuisance parameters. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(t \to e\mu q) < 1.12 \times 10^{-7}$, which are translated into constraints on the relevant dimension-6 Wilson coefficients within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. These results significantly improve upon previous bounds and further constrain scenarios predicting flavour-violating interactions in the top-quark sector.
