Optimizing the Trigger Menu Compiler in ATLAS Phase-II Upgrades

Upgrades to the ATLAS trigger system are critical in handling the expected 40 million crossings per second in the Phase-II operation of the LHC. Located in a human-readable Trigger Menu file, there exist certain trigger requirements that facilitate the selection of interesting events from this large stream of collision data. The Trigger Menu Compiler (TMC) configures the file into one that can be interpreted by field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). However, due to novel hardware and a change in the implementation of trigger inputs, Phase II requires a new TMC, known as TMC2. We present an investigation on TMC2, including the alteration and refactoring of the current Python scripts.
