Evaluation of SiPMs for current and future High Energy Physics detectors
Description
This work explores the role of the silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) in use for high-energy physics (HEP) detectors. As the semiconductor industry is rapidly evolving, SiPMs emerged as a promising solution for current and future HEP experiments. Thanks to their high efficiency and precision in photodetection, remaining compact and cost-effective at the same time, they became suitable detectors for the field. Beginning with a brief introduction to the semiconductors and detection principles, this thesis provides an overview of current and future implementations of SiPMs and progresses to an examination of SiPMs and their compatibility with plastic scintillators. Experimental evaluation of the SiPMs is conducted through a basic laser laboratory setup and measurements of the scintillator bar with the cosmic rays. The synthesis of findings aims to underscore the suitability of the SiPMs for diverse HEP experiments.
