Studies on gas system upgrades for the CMS RPC detectors at CERN

This master thesis work focused on the upgrade of the gas system of the RPC detector in the CMS experiment at CERN. Since these gaseous detectors are connected to the gas system with extremely fragile elements it is matter of fundamental importance maintaining a stable pressure in the detectors to avoid rupture of these components. To do so, an automatic regulation valve was added on each output line serving from 13 to 26 detector chambers. However, since these lines present pretty different pressure and flow-rate conditions the seat of each valve has been customized. To find the right geometry of the seat both simulation studies and experiments have been performed. The simulations were carried out using the commercial software ANSYS while experimental data were taken both using a laboratory setup and modifying several lines on the actual experiment. Results from the simulations were compared with the hands-on test results and 4 different seat geometries were designed and studied assuring they could work with the required conditions. The seats have been 3D printed and the installation of these regulation valves on the system is foreseen for November 2021 in order to be ready for the next LHC run.
