CAS Introduction to Accelerator Physics in Bulgaria

The CERN Accelerator School (CAS) and the Institute for Nuclear Research & Nuclear Energy (INRNE – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) jointly organised a course on Introduction to Accelerators, at the Grand Hotel Varna, Bulgaria, from 19 September to 1 October, 2010.
The intensive programme comprised 39 lectures, 3 seminars, 4 tutorials where the students were split into three groups, a poster session where students could present their own work, and 7 hours of guided and private study. Feedback from the participants was extremely positive, praising the expertise and enthusiasm of the lecturers, as well as the high standard and excellent quality of their lectures. For the first time at CAS, the CERN Director-General, Rolf Heuer, visited the school and presented a seminar entitled “CERN & High Energy Physics – the Grand Picture”.
In addition to the academic programme, the students had the opportunity during the traditional one-day excursion to visit the Aladja Monastery built into the local rock and enjoy a visit to the beautiful Cape Kaliakra. An evening visit was also organised to the Varna Observatory in collaboration with Ms Svejina Dimitrova, Head of the Astronomic Observatory and Planetarium, Varna.
The next CAS course will be the Joint School on Particle Accelerators (CERN-US-Japan and Russia) on the topic "Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Lasers". The course will take place in Erice, Italy from 6 to 15 April, 2011. The next specialised course will be on "High Power Hadron Machines" and will take place in Bilbao, Spain from 24 May to 2 June, 2011. Information can be found on the CAS website.

L’École du CERN sur les accélérateurs (CAS) et l’Institut de recherche nucléaire et de l’énergie nucléaire (INRNE – Académie bulgare des sciences) ont organisé conjointement un cours d’introduction à la physique des accélérateurs, au Grand Hôtel Varna, en Bulgarie, du 19 septembre au 1er octobre 2010.
Le programme a été soutenu : 39 conférences, 3 séminaires, 4 ateliers où les participants ont été répartis en trois groupes, une séance d’affichage permettant aux étudiants de présenter leurs propres travaux et 7 heures de travaux dirigés ou individuels. Les commentaires reçus ont été très positifs. Les participants ont salué les compétences et l’enthousiasme des intervenants, ainsi que l’excellente qualité et le haut niveau de leurs conférences. Pour la première fois dans l’histoire des écoles CAS, le Directeur général du CERN, le professeur Rolf Heuer, s’est rendu sur place et a présenté un séminaire intitulé « CERN & High Energy Physics – the Grand Picture ».
En dehors du programme scientifique, la traditionnelle journée d'excursion a permis aux étudiants de visiter l’Aladja, un monastère construit dans la roche, et d’apprécier le magnifique cap Kaliakra. En soirée, une visite de l’Observatoire de Varna a également été organisée, en collaboration avec Svejina Dimitrova, chef de l’Observatoire astronomique et planétarium de Varna.
La prochaine école CAS, une école conjointe sur les accélérateurs de particules (CERN-États-Unis-Japon et Russie) sera consacrée au rayonnement synchrotron et aux lasers à électrons libres. Elle aura lieu à Erice (Italie) du 6 au 15 avril 2011. Le prochain cours spécialisé portera sur les machines hadroniques haute puissance et se déroulera à Bilbao (Espagne), du 24 mai au 2 juin 2011.
