CERN physicists, take out your smartphones! Two new particle physics applications for Android phones have been developed by a physicist from the University of Bern: “Particle Properties” and “Particle Physics Booklet 2010”.
“When I'm on shift, I enjoy looking at the online event displays,” says Igor Kreslo from the Laboratory for High Energy Physics at the University of Bern, the physicist who has developed the two particle physics applications for Android. “Sometimes very beautiful events appear, with many different particles. I like to discuss these displays with my students, just to develop their ability to identify particles. We try to find out which particle is which and how it might decay… I think that's the best way to teach students the phenomenology of particle physics.”
When scientists study particle physics, they require some vital information, such as the decay branching ratios: “details” which are not so easy to remember by heart… “I thought it would be nice to have a handy thing to tell you these numbers,” says Igor. Thus, the idea of the first application was born: an online database for the properties of elementary particles.
“Actually, when you're on shift you have some spare time if everything is going well,” explains Igor. “So while I was on shift at T2K in Japan, I had the opportunity to develop the 'Particle Properties' application. I also decided to create an application for the 'Particle Physics Booklet'*, which I use almost every day.”
Designed at first for physicists in Igor’s laboratory, the two applications met with great success, encouraging Igor to put them on Google Play. “I received some very nice feedback from my colleagues, so I thought that they might be interesting to other physicists too, especially at CERN,” adds Igor. “If people want to send me comments or suggestions for new applications, I would be happy to hear from them, although I should emphasize that I'm not a professional Android programmer - developing applications is just a hobby.” A very useful one, we might add…

Physiciens du CERN, à vos mobiles ! Un physicien de l’Université de Berne a conçu pour Android deux nouvelles applications de physique des particules : Particle Properties (Propriétés des particules) et Particle Physics Booklet 2010 (Livret 2010 de physique des particules).
« Quand je suis de service, j’adore regarder les événements qui s’affichent en temps réel, raconte Igor Kreslo, le physicien du Laboratoire de Physique des hautes énergies de l’Université de Berne qui a réalisé ces deux applications pour Android. Parfois, il en apparaît de très beaux, avec beaucoup de particules différentes. J’aime examiner ces images avec mes étudiants, simplement pour développer leur capacité à identifier les particules. Nous essayons de reconnaître chaque particule et de savoir comment elle pourrait se désintégrer… je pense que c’est la meilleure façon d’enseigner aux étudiants la phénoménologie de la physique des particules. »
Quand les chercheurs étudient la physique, ils ont besoin de certaines informations cruciales, telles que les rapports d’embranchement des désintégrations – des « détails » qu’il n'est pas facile de savoir par cœur… « J’ai pensé que ce serait bien de disposer de quelque chose de commode pour retrouver ces nombres », ajoute Igor. Ainsi est née la première idée d’application : une base de données en ligne des propriétés des particules élémentaires.
« En fait, quand vous êtes de service en salle de contrôle et que tout se passe bien, vous avez du temps libre, explique Igor. Ainsi, quand je travaillais au contrôle à T2K, au Japon, j’ai eu la possibilité de réaliser l’application Particle properties. J’ai aussi décidé de créer une application pour le Particle Physics Booklet*, que j’utilise presque tous les jours. »
Conçues d’abord pour les physiciens de son laboratoire, les deux applications d’Igor ont connu un grand succès, ce qui l’a encouragé à les mettre sur Google Play. « Ayant reçu un retour très positif de mes collègues, j’ai pensé qu’elles pourraient aussi intéresser d’autres physiciens, notamment au CERN, conclut-il. Tous les commentaires et suggestions seront bienvenus ; mais je dois souligner que je ne suis pas un programmeur Android professionnel – pour moi, c’est simplement un passe-temps. » – Très utile… pourrions-nous ajouter !
*Cette application utilise, avec sa permission, les travaux du PDG, lequel n'apporte toutefois pas d'appui technique à cet outil.
