Children's drawings exhibited in the Globe

"Draw Me A Physicist" has been a success. Members of the public visiting the exhibition in the Globe of Science and Innovation have praised the scientific and creative balance the children of neighbouring France and the Canton of Geneva have obtained through their visit to CERN.
The large room in the Globe has been transformed from a hollow shell into a room full of colour and interest. “The exhibition is the successful conclusion of a six-month process. Both the physicists and the children showed a lot of enthusiasm in participating in the project”, says Corinne Pralavorio, who is in charge of Local Communication and was the project leader. “It was particularly rewarding for the physicists to see the children's very positive response and their interest and motivation to find out more about their job".
Some of the physicists who participated in the programme by accompanying the children on a visit to the Laboratory or by presenting CERN in the classrooms were even able to recognize themselves in some of the drawings. "It was amazing for all of us to realize how the children pictured physicists, and it just shows how little people know about the job, since many confused chemistry with physics. It's good to see that, in most cases, the second drawings show that kids have understood what a physicist does”, says Corinne.
The project will have a follow-up as proposals have already been made to start a new collaboration involving primary schools with the Education Nationale in the Pays de Gex and Geneva’s Department de l’instruction publique. In the meantime, some of the drawings are pictured on the envelopes on sale in sets of ten in the Post Offices of the Pays de Gex. You can see the drawings as well as a collection of photos and videos on the programme’s website. The exhibition will move to the Main Building in the summer and then to the University of Geneva in September.

L’exposition « Dessine-moi un physicien », organisée au Globe de la science et de l’innovation, a été un succès. Les visiteurs ont pu y admirer des œuvres réalisées par des enfants de France voisine et du canton de Genève à la suite de leur visite du CERN.
Pendant six mois, des enfants du Pays de Gex, de Meyrin, de Satigny et de Vernier, âgés de 9 à 11 ans, ont pu allier créativité et curiosité pour la science en représentant par des dessins leur vision de ce qu'est un physicien. En mai, huit paires de dessins par classe ont été sélectionnées par les écoles participantes ; ces dessins ont ensuite été exposés au second étage du Globe. Les visiteurs ont pu ainsi apprécier le contraste entre les représentations « d’avant » – des Albert Einstein hauts en couleur – et les représentations « d’après », montrant des gens décontractés assis dans un bureau.
Le vaste espace du Globe, habituellement vide, s’est métamorphosé en galerie d’art pleine de couleurs. « L’exposition est l’aboutissement d'un travail de six mois. Les physiciens tout comme les enfants se sont enthousiasmés pour ce projet », affirme Corinne Pralavario, chargée de la communication locale et responsable du projet. « C’était particulièrement gratifiant pour les physiciens de voir l’intérêt manifesté par les enfants et leur curiosité pour ce métier de physicien.»
Certains des physiciens qui avaient participé au programme, en accompagnant les enfants lors de leur visite du Laboratoire ou en venant présenter le CERN dans les salles de classe, ont même pu se reconnaître dans les dessins. « C’était une expérience étonnante de voir la représentation que se font les enfants d’un physicien, et cela montre à quel point notre métier est mal connu. Beaucoup confondent la chimie et la physique. Heureusement, dans la plupart des cas, le deuxième dessin montre que les enfants ont compris en quoi consiste le travail du physicien », conclut Corinne.
Il y aura une suite à cette expérience. Des discussions sont en cours avec l’Éducation nationale, pour le pays de Gex, et le Département de l’isntruction publique, pour le Canton de Genève, concernant un nouveau projet qui serait réalisé avec les écoles primaires de la région. En attendant, certains dessins figurent sur des enveloppes en vente par lots de dix aux bureaux de poste du Pays de Gex. Vous pouvez aussi voir les dessins, ainsi qu’une collection de photos et de vidéos, sur le site du programme. L’exposition sera présentée au bâtiment principal cet été puis à l’Université de Genève en septembre.
