Complex Integrated Circuits in the Radiation Environment at the LHCb High Energy Physics Experiment and Extrapolation to the Case of Space-based Experiments

Description

The work presented in this thesis was done in the context of the Phase Ia upgrade program of the LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment from CERN. More precise, this work was focused on the RICH (Ring Imagining Cherenkov) sub-detectors. In this thesis are given the radiation testing results for 3 complex integrated circuits: one ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) and 2 commercial-grade FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technologies. Various testing methodologies including methods for detection, measuring and correction of radiation-induced failures when the circuits are exposed to ionizing radiation are proposed for each tested integrated circuit. The results are extrapolated to their target applications.
