The CERN Hostel is located in the heart of the Meyrin site and provides the Organization’s many users with a comfortable and peaceful place to stay. The services offered by the Hostel, which is managed by the GS-IS Group, have seen many changes over the years.
The first CERN Hostel (Building 38) was built in 1982 in response to an increasing demand for accommodation, which until then had been met by a handful of converted bedrooms in Building 5 and, since 1974, by 81 additional bedrooms made available to CERN through an agreement with the Foyer Schumann in Saint-Genis-Pouilly. Let’s not even mention the fact that the barracks now occupied by the CERN clubs used to be dormitories…
The Hostel was gradually extended, particularly in 1995 with the construction of Building 39, and then in 2007, when Building 41 was added, resulting in a total of 413 rooms (495 beds) today. In addition, a new agreement now gives users access to 151 low-cost rooms at the Foyer Schumann, and the CERN Hostel also manages 14 apartments in Meyrin and Grand-Saconnex, which are generally rented out for long stays.
The CERN Hostel aims to offer its customers a high-quality service at reasonable rates. “Since 2009, we have significantly improved the Hostel’s services,” says Véronique Sogno, Head of the Site Services Section (GS-IS-SIS). “Among other things, we have replaced the furniture and fittings in every room, renovated the bathrooms, refitted the communal kitchens, centralised the fire detection system... and we’ve actively encouraged the Foyer Schumann to review its level of service too.”
In response to continually increasing demand, the Hostel implemented a state-of-the-art hotel software system in 2009 to ensure optimal management of reservations: “Before we acquired this tool, we processed all reservations by phone, fax or e-mail. It was impossible for us to get an overview of the occupancy rate in real time,” recalls Bernard Goicoechea, CERN Hostel supervisor. “Now customers have access to a reservation system developed by the GS-AIS-EB team, which gives them immediate information on room availability.” “On the service side, we have extended the opening hours of the Reception to 1 a.m., seven days a week,” adds Véronique Sogno. “We offer a laundry service and three self-service launderettes. We’ve also added a breastfeeding area, in consultation with the CERN Medical Service.”
With an average occupancy rate of more than 75% over the last six years, peaking at more than 95% during the summer when CERN welcomes many students (the average occupancy rate for a hotel in Geneva is around 60%), the CERN Hostel is doing great business. “From the receptionists and cleaners, to the head housekeeper and the maintenance and supplies managers... more than 50 people (on external contracts) work every day to maintain the high level of service offered by the CERN Hostel,” concludes Bernard Goicoechea.

Situé au cœur du site de Meyrin, le foyer-hôtel du CERN offre confort et tranquillité aux nombreux utilisateurs que compte l’Organisation. Géré par le groupe GS-IS, il a, au fil des ans, vu ses prestations progresser.
Le premier foyer-hôtel du CERN (le bâtiment 38) a été construit en 1982 pour répondre à un besoin croissant d’hébergements, besoin jusqu’alors comblé par quelques chambres aménagées dans le bâtiment 5 et, à partir de 1974, par l’addition de 81 chambres mises à la disposition du CERN via une convention entre le CERN et le Foyer Schumann de Saint-Genis-Pouilly. Nous ne parlerons pas ici des dortoirs qu’étaient autrefois les baraques des clubs du CERN…
Successivement agrandi, notamment en 1995, avec la construction du bâtiment 39, puis en 2007, avec celle du 41, le foyer-hôtel du CERN compte désormais 413 chambres (soit 495 lits). De plus, une nouvelle convention permet actuellement aux utilisateurs de bénéficier de 151 chambres à bas coût au Foyer Schumann. Par ailleurs, 14 appartements situés à Meyrin et au Grand-Saconnex, principalement loués pour de longs séjours, sont aussi gérés par le foyer-hôtel du CERN.
Le foyer-hôtel du CERN cherche à offrir à ses utilisateurs des services de qualité tout en proposant des chambres à des tarifs raisonnables. « Depuis 2009, nous avons très nettement amélioré les prestations du foyer-hôtel, souligne Véronique Sogno, chef de section des services de sites (GS-IS-SIS). Nous avons, entre autres, remplacé les meubles et équipements de toutes les chambres, rénové les sanitaires, refait les cuisines communes, centralisé la détection incendie… Aussi, nous avons vivement encouragé le Foyer Schumann à revoir son niveau de service. »
Pour répondre à une demande toujours croissante, le foyer-hôtel s’est doté, en 2009, d’un logiciel d’hôtellerie très performant permettant d’assurer une gestion optimale des réservations : « Avant l’acquisition de cet outil, nous traitions les réservations par téléphone, fax ou courriel. Il nous était alors impossible d’avoir une vue du taux de remplissage en temps réel, se souvient Bernard Goicoechea, superviseur du foyer-hôtel du CERN. À présent, les clients ont à leur disposition un système de réservation, développé par l’équipe de GS-AIS-EB, qui permet d’avoir une information immédiate sur la disponibilité des chambres. » « Côté service, nous avons étendu les horaires d’ouverture de la réception jusqu’à 1 h du matin, sept jours sur sept, ajoute Véronique Sogno. Nous proposons par ailleurs un service de blanchisserie, ainsi que trois laveries en libre service. Nous avons également mis en place un coin allaitement, en concertation avec le Service médical du CERN. »
Avec un taux de remplissage moyen de plus de 75 % sur les six dernières années et des pics d’activité à plus de 95 % durant l’été, avec l’accueil des étudiants (quand le taux moyen pour un hôtel à Genève est d’environ 60%), le foyer-hôtel du CERN est une affaire qui roule. « Entre les réceptionnistes, les agents de nettoyage, le gouvernant, les responsables de l’intendance… ce sont plus de 50 personnes (employés d’un contractant extérieur) qui œuvrent chaque jour au maintien du haut niveau de prestations qu’assure le foyer-hôtel du CERN », conclut Bernard Goicoechea.
