First of all, you need to know what “hack” means. A hack is a quick solution to a problem, often the cleverest one if not the most elegant. So, a Science Hack Day is a 48-hour all-night event that brings together “hackers” to create innovative solutions to scientific problems.
This year’s event was held in San Francisco from 12 to 13 November and was a huge success! It hosted around 150 science “hackers” from five continents, and presented challenging events from different scientific fields. In the “LHC Data Hack” event, results from CMS presented “hackers” with a tough challenge: presenting this scientific analysis in a way that allows people to learn, create art or even come up with new science.
The group that accepted the LHC challenge was made up of people from surprisingly different backgrounds, from science to art and engineering. Together they created a website that demonstrates and explains a very complex LHC dataset to a general audience. To do so, they decided to create two histograms that depicted parts of the analysis process. A day later, the hacking stopped and the “LHC team” had managed to finish its projects in the stipulated time.
So there it is: creative, clever and awe-inspiring innovations created in only a weekend in an amazing collaboration of science and technology. So if you’re a coder, designer, scientist, hacker or just an enthusiastic person with good ideas, Science Hack Day is for you!

Les Science Hack Days : une occasion exceptionnelle pour les scientifiques, designers et autres mordus de technologie de partager leurs astuces. La dernière édition de la Science Hack Day a eu lieu à San Francisco ; présente au grand rendez-vous, la collaboration CMS a trouvé un moyen à la fois simple et original de présenter ses données.
Avant tout, que signifie « hack » ? Un hack est une solution rapide à un problème, souvent la plus intelligente, à défaut d’être la plus élégante. Une Science Hack Day est une manifestation qui, durant 48 heures non-stop, rassemble des mordus de sciences pour créer des solutions innovantes à des problèmes scientifiques.
L'édition 2011, qui s’est tenue à San Francisco les 12 et 13 novembre, a été un immense succès. L’événement a attiré près de 150 passionnés de différentes disciplines scientifiques, venus des cinq continents relever des défis stimulants. Dans le cadre de l'événement LHC Data Hack, la collaboration CMS a lancé un rude défi aux « bidouilleurs » : présenter l’analyse scientifique des résultats de CMS d’une façon qui permette aux participants d’apprendre des choses, de créer sur le plan artistique, voire d’innover sur le plan scientifique.
Le groupe qui a accepté de relever ce défi était très hétéroclite : scientifiques, artistes et ingénieurs ont mis leurs connaissances en commun pour créer un site web ayant pour but de montrer et d'expliquer au grand public un ensemble de données du LHC très complexe. À cet effet, le groupe a décidé de tracer deux histogrammes décrivant les différentes parties du processus d’analyse. Le lendemain, au terme de la séance, l’équipe LHC a réussi à achever son projet dans les délais impartis.
C’est donc cela les Science Hack Days : des innovations créatives, intelligentes et stupéfiantes créées en seulement un week-end dans un bouillonnement d'idées stimulantes mêlant science et technologie.
