Description
Gilles Sauvage, a physicist from LAPP-Annecy working with ATLAS, passed away on 21 April 2010.
Gilles Sauvage was deeply involved in many generations of experiments at CERN as he followed the evolution of the field at the energy forefront. He started with the LAL-Orsay group in the WA2 Hyperon experiment at the SPS West Area, where he worked from 1976 to 1979. With the same group he was then a founding member of the UA2 Collaboration at the SPS p-pbar Collider, in which he was active throughout the duration of the experiment. He then moved to LAPP-Annecy in 1986 and joined first the L3 group at LEP, making important contributions to the construction, calibration, installation and commissioning of the BGO crystal calorimeter. Later, in the mid-1990s, Gilles joined ATLAS and led the LAPP-Annecy group through the intense period of the construction of one third of the ATLAS LAr barrel electromagnetic calorimeter modules at LAPP, and followed hands-on its integration and installation at CERN. He retired in 2006, but his passion for physics motivated him to remain fully active until the last day.
Gilles was an exceptional experimentalist, who set very high standards of how to work with great human qualities in a large collaboration. He always sought the most elegant technical and scientific solutions, not accepting any easy short-cuts. His style? We never saw him acting as a big boss, but rather motivating junior and senior colleagues by setting the example of working hard on the floor over many years.
Gilles had other passions: mountains, flowers, birds and music. It was always a pleasure and a privilege to listen to him and profit from his great culture. Gilles’ good mood will remain in our memories forever. Our thoughts and sympathy go to his family.

Gilles Sauvage, physicien du LAPP-Annecy auprès de l’expérience ATLAS, nous a quitté le 21 avril 2010.
Gilles Sauvage a participé activement à de nombreuses générations d’expériences au CERN en suivant l’évolution du domaine toujours aux frontières de l’énergie. Il débute au LAL-Orsay auprès de l’expérience hypérons WA2 à la zone Ouest du SPS, où il travaille de 1976 à 1979. Avec le même groupe, il est ensuite un membre fondateur de la Collaboration UA2 auprès du collisionneur p-pbar SPS, collaboration pour laquelle il reste actif pendant toute la durée de l'expérience. En 1986, il rejoint le LAPP d’Annecy en intégrant d’abord le groupe L3 au LEP. Sa contribution à la construction, à l'étalonnage, à l'installation et à la mise en service du calorimètre à cristaux de BGO y est importante. Plus tard, au milieu des années 90, Gilles rejoint ATLAS et dirige le groupe du LAPP d'Annecy tout au long de la période intense de construction du calorimètre à Argon Liquide d'ATLAS. C'est avec sa minutie inégalable que Gilles a suivi chaque phase de la construction des modules du calorimètre électromagnétique du tonneau : construction d'un tiers des modules au LAPP, puis l'intégration et l'installation de l'ensemble au CERN. Il prend sa retraite en 2006, mais sa passion pour la physique l’a poussé à rester pleinement actif jusqu’au dernier jour.
Expérimentateur hors pair, Gilles attachait une très grande importance aux valeurs humaines dans le cadre de son travail au sein d’une vaste collaboration. Il recherchait toujours les solutions techniques et scientifiques les plus élégantes, en ne se contentant pas de raccourcis faciles. Son style ? Nous ne l’avons jamais vu agir avec l’attitude d’un grand chef, mais plutôt comme celui qui encourageait ses collègues, débutants comme expérimentés, en donnant l’exemple d’une personne qui a travaillé sans relâche tout au long de sa carrière.
Gilles avait bien d’autres passions, notamment la montagne, les fleurs, les oiseaux et la musique. L’écouter en bénéficiant de sa grande culture a toujours été un plaisir et un privilège. La bonne humeur de Gilles restera pour toujours dans nos mémoires. Nous adressons nos plus sincères condoléances à sa famille.
