CAD – End of Euclid and move to CATIA/Smarteam

After 25 years in the service of the CERN design offices, 3D-design software Euclid from MDTVision will be finally stopped at the end of 2008. Having postponed this date for as long as possible to avoid disturbing the LHC project, CERN has become the last user of this software.
Euclid is being progressively replaced by one of the great references of the market place, CATIA V5/Smarteam from Dassault Systèmes.
Coupled with the mechanical design software CATIA V5, Smarteam is a PLM system (Product Lifecycle Management), which allows follow-up, management, and integration of all the data linked to mechanical designs.
Data currently in Euclid is subject to an on-going large scale conversion to CATIA V5. In particular:
- All drawings from Euclid databases, which haven't been deleted by their authors will be saved in HP-GL-format and will therefore remain available;
- All Euclid 3D-models, which haven't been deleted by their authors, are converted and saved in VRML-format and will remain accessible;
- All Euclid 3D-models declared essential (critical) by their authors will be converted to CATIA.
All Euclid users have been informed of the procedure concerning this migration, which will have to be completed before the end of 2008. It is imperative that all users prepare properly the files to be migrated and that they will create no new data with Euclid.
The move from Euclid to CATIA V5/Smarteam requires considerable effort both from the users and the support. For this reason neither the approval process of official drawings nor the utilities for their management (CERN title blocks, CDD, EDMS) will experience any major modifications during 2008.

Après 25 ans au service des bureaux d'étude du CERN, le logiciel de conception mécanique 3D Euclid de MDTVision, sera définitivement arrêté fin 2008. Cette date ayant été reportée autant que possible pour éviter de perturber le projet LHC, le CERN est devenu le dernier utilisateur de cet outil.
Euclid est progressivement remplacé par la solution CATIAV5/Smarteam de Dassault Systemes, une des grandes références du marché.
Couplé à l'outil de conception mécanique CATIA V5, Smarteam est un logiciel PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) qui permettra à terme le suivi, la gestion et l'intégration de toutes les données liées aux études mécaniques.
L'ensemble des données Euclid fait actuellement l'objet d'une conversion globale en CATIA V5. En particulier :
- Tous les plans des bases de données Euclid, non détruits par leurs auteurs, sont sauvegardés en format HPGL et sont donc toujours disponibles;
- Tous les modèles 3D Euclid, non détruits par leurs auteurs, sont convertis et sauvegardés en format VRML toujours visibles;
- Tous les modèles 3D Euclid déclarés essentiels (critiques) par leurs auteurs seront convertis en CATIA.
Tous les utilisateurs Euclid ont été informés des procédures de cette migration, qui devra être achevée avant fin 2008. Il est impératif que tous ces utilisateurs préparent convenablement les fichiers à migrer et qu'ils ne créent plus de nouvelles données avec Euclid.
Le passage d'Euclid à CATIA V5/Smarteam demande un effort considérable tant aux utilisateurs qu'au support. C'est pourquoi le processus d'approbation des plans officiels et les outils en place pour leur suivi (cartouches CERN, CDD, EDMS) ne feront l'objet d'aucune modification majeure en 2008.
