This year ALICE celebrates 20 years of exploration of the world of strong interactions and the Quark Gluon Plasma. To mark the anniversary, the collaboration has created a timeline that chronicles the experiment’s history from 1993, when the original letter of intent was submitted, to 2013, when the first proton-lead run took place.
The ALICE timeline examines various key aspects of the experiment’s history, including the connection between ALICE and other heavy ion experiments. Over the years, the experiment has adapted along with developments on heavy ion physics. ALICE has added several new components to the detector following new experimental findings. The timeline also links the experiment’s history with the theoretical advancements in the field of QCD and the growing understanding of strong interactions.
But let’s not forget the human element of the experiment’s history. It has taken a lot of hard work to build the detectors, to develop software for collecting and analysing the data, and to ensure the smooth running of the machine. The timeline brings the physicists and engineers who have made ALICE possible into the spotlight.

Cette année, cela fera 20 ans qu’ALICE étudie le monde des interactions fortes et le plasma de quarks et de gluons. À l’occasion de cet anniversaire, la collaboration a établi une chronologie retraçant l’histoire de l’expérience, de 1993, année où la lettre d’intention d’ALICE a été soumise, à 2013, lorsqu’a eu lieu la première exploitation proton-ion plomb.
La chronologie d’ALICE présente des aspects essentiels de l’histoire de l’expérience, y compris les liens entre ALICE et d’autres expériences consacrées aux ions lourds. Au fil des années, l’expérience s’est adaptée à l’évolution de la physique des ions lourds. Pour tenir compte des nouveaux résultats obtenus, la collaboration a équipé son détecteur d’éléments supplémentaires. La chronologie établit également un lien entre l’histoire de l’expérience et les avancées théoriques dans le domaine de la chromodynamique quantique (CDQ), ainsi que la compréhension toujours plus grande des interactions fortes.
Mais ne négligeons pas la composante humaine de l’histoire de l’expérience. De gros efforts ont été déployés pour construire les détecteurs, pour développer les logiciels destinés à la collecte et à l’analyse des données, et pour assurer le bon fonctionnement de la machine. La chronologie met à l’honneur les physiciens et les ingénieurs sans qui ALICE ne serait pas.
