Dmitry Zimin, founder of the Russian philanthropic foundation Dynasty, visited CERN on 23 October. Zimin, who is himself a scientist and businessman, founded Dynasty in order to support scientific education and a greater public understanding of scientific thinking. Zimin met the Bulletin to reflect on the experience and what had interested him about CERN.
Zimin, who had read about and researched CERN before his visit, felt prepared for the physics at CERN but was greatly impressed by the collaborative “brainforce.” He observed that “The organization of all of these people is not less important as an achievement than all of the technical achievements, the collider, the experiments.” He was amazed at “how CERN has been able to organize such a grand collaboration of different people from different institutes of countries from all over the world.”
At the core of the Dynasty Foundation’s ideals is the dissemination of scientific thought. Zimin believes that the spread of superstition and reduced scientific literacy that he sees in Russia is “as dangerous as nuclear weapons …dangerous for the human being.” In CERN’s collaborative community, therefore, Zimin believes there is tremendous potential for changing this trend of illiteracy.
He expanded that given the collaborative successes within CERN, the next responsibility is to reach out. “What I would call for is to ask this intellectual elite of the world to talk to governments, to mass media, to opinion-makers in general, to communicate science all over the world, to popularize science and the scientific approach. The general goal of our foundation is exactly this goal, to communicate science and stimulate a scientific vision of the world among people.”
Zimin closed by stressing, “I admire the things which are going on here… I really admire the people and the work which is done here.”

Dmitri Zimine, créateur de la Fondation russe Dynasty, est venu au CERN le 23 octobre. Homme d’affaires et scientifique, il a fondé Dynasty pour promouvoir l’éducation scientifique et faciliter une plus grande compréhension de la pensée scientifique dans le grand public. Il a rencontré le Bulletin pour évoquer cette expérience et donner ses impressions sur le CERN.
Dmitri Zimine, qui s’était documenté sur le CERN avant sa visite, se sentait prêt à affronter l’aspect scientifique du CERN, mais il a été très impressionné par la puissance créative de la collaboration scientifique dans le domaine. «L’organisation permettant à toutes ces personnes de travailler ensemble est une réussite aussi éclatante que toutes les réalisations techniques du CERN, qu’il s’agisse de l’accélérateur ou des expériences», a-t-il estimé. Il s’est dit impressionné par «la façon dont le CERN a su mettre en place une collaboration entre des gens de toutes sortes, venus d’instituts divers, et de différents pays à travers le monde.»
La diffusion de la pensée scientifique se trouve au cœur de la mission de la Fondation Dynasty. Dmitri Zimine est persuadé que la généralisation de la superstition et l’abaissement de la culture scientifique dont il est témoin dans son pays sont «aussi dangereux que l’arme nucléaire… c’est un danger pour l’être humain». C’est pourquoi il voit dans la communauté scientifique du CERN une force potentielle qui pourrait l’aider dans son combat.
Pour lui, étant donné les réalisations du CERN en matière de collaboration scientifique, la prochaine étape dans les missions du Laboratoire doit être de diffuser les savoirs. «Je voudrais appeler l’élite intellectuelle du monde à s’adresser aux pouvoirs publics, aux médias, aux faiseurs d’opinion en général, pour diffuser la science dans le monde entier, pour populariser la science et l’approche scientifique. Le but général de notre fondation est exactement celui-là; il s’agit de faire connaître la science et d’encourager dans le grand public une vision scientifique du monde.»
Il termine en évoquant le CERN: «Cet endroit est impressionnant. J’admire vraiment les gens qui travaillent ici et ce qu’ils font.»
