With deep sorrow, I must announce that our colleague Siegmund Brandt passed away on Sunday last week after a long struggle with illness.
Brandt first worked at CERN in 1961 on pion-proton interactions using bubble chambers and earned his PhD in bubble chamber work from the University of Bonn in 1963.
Later, he joined DESY working on PLUTO and TASSO at PETRA where he contributed to the three-jet analysis that led to the discovery of gluons in 1979. After that, in the mid-eighties, he returned to CERN, where he worked on ALEPH. His group contributed to the forward detectors of ALEPH with the Small Angle Tracker (SATR) and the Small Angle Monitor for Background (SAMBA). Brandt did some analysis work on Bhabha scattering and on jet production. After his retirement, he concentrated on writing books on physics. His last book, The Harvest of the Century was well received. Brandt was also elected to the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. His friends and colleagues will dearly miss him.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que je vous annonce la disparition de notre collègue Siegmund Brandt, décédé dimanche dernier des suites d’une longue maladie.
Siegmund Brandt commence à travailler au CERN en 1961. Il étudie alors les interactions pion-proton au moyen de chambres à bulles. En 1963, il obtient un doctorat de l’Université de Bonn pour ses travaux sur les chambres à bulles.
Plus tard, il rejoint le DESY pour travailler sur les expériences PLUTO et TASSO, auprès de l’accélérateur PETRA, où il participe à une analyse à trois jets qui a conduit à la découverte des gluons en 1979. Il revient ensuite au CERN au milieu des années 1980, où il rejoint l’expérience ALEPH. Son groupe contribue aux détecteurs à petits angles d’ALEPH avec SATR (Small Angle Tracker) et SAMBA (Small Angle Monitor for Background). Siegmund réalise des analyses sur la diffusion de Bhabha et sur la production de jets. Une fois à la retraite, il se consacre à la rédaction d'ouvrages sur la physique. Son dernier livre, The Harvest of the Century, a été très bien reçu. Siegmund était également membre de l’Académie polonaise des arts et des sciences. Il manquera beaucoup à ses amis et ses collègues.
