Measurement of the Higgs Pair Production Cross Section at 14 TeV in the Decay Channel to Two Photons and Two B-Jets

The recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson with a mass around 125 GeV by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC provides clear and unambiguous evidence of some mechanism of spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking and of the generation of the masses of fundamental particles. One of the most important subsequent measurements for reconstructing the scalar potential of the Higgs doublet field is the measurement of the Higgs self-couplings. The Higgs self-couplings can be measured by studying the production rates and kinematics of double and triple Higgs boson production at the LHC. These processes are highly suppressed with respect to the rate for producing a single Higgs boson, therefore, a large amount of integrated luminosity is required in order for them to be observed and measured. In this study we consider the feasibility for measurements of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling using the proposed High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which is expected to be able to deliver a total integrated luminosity of 3 ab−1.
