Kurt Hübner will long be remembered at CERN for his leadership in the accelerator field during his 38 years of service to it. A brilliant, conscientious and determined physicist, he has always been known for his humility and humanity. He retired from CERN on 29th November.
Kurt Hübner, who is Austrian, joined CERN in 1964 as a fellow, to work on the CESAR electron storage ring project for the ISR. He became a member of the personnel in 1966 and joined the ISR Division two years later. At the end of the 1970s he played an important role in the design studies for LEP, in particular proposing that the existing synchrotrons be used as the injectors for the new collider. It was therefore logical that he should take on the responsibility for designing the LEP injector chain from 1983 onwards. In addition to his involvement in the commissioning and operation of the collider, he took part in drawing up the proposals for the LHC and in the studies for CLIC, the project for a future linear collider, of which he became an enthusiastic promoter. He became Leader of the PS Division in 1991, before being appointed as Director of Accelerators in 1994, a post he held until 2001. Since then, he has represented CERN in OECD and ICFA working groups on future accelerators. In addition to his CERN duties, he has also been a member of the committees of many international accelerators, including the scientific councils of DESY and LAL.
Last February, he was awarded the European Physical Society's Accelerator Prize, on which occasion the selection board stated that: 'He [had] provided guidance for generations of accelerator physicists and engineers, thereby contributing immensely to the prosperity of accelerators at CERN and many other laboratories around the world'.

Le CERN conservera longtemps son empreinte. Depuis 38 ans au service des accélérateurs, Kurt Hübner a su montrer une direction dans ce domaine. Ce physicien brillant, consciencieux et déterminé s'est toujours distingué par son humilité et son humanité. Le 29 novembre, il prenait sa retraite du CERN.
Kurt Hübner, de nationalité autrichienne, est arrivé au CERN en 1964 comme boursier, travaillant sur le projet CESAR d'anneau de stockage d'électrons pour les ISR. Membre du personnel en 1966, il intègre la division ISR en 1968. A la fin des années 70, il est un acteur important des études du LEP, proposant notamment l'utilisation des synchrotrons existants comme injecteurs du collisionneur. C'est donc logiquement qu'il devient responsable de la conception de la chaîne d'injection du LEP à partir de 1983. Impliqué dans la mise en service et l'exploitation du collisionneur, il participe également à l'élaboration des propositions pour le LHC et aux études de CLIC, le projet d'un futur Collisionneur linéaire. Kurt Hübner en sera un promoteur enthousiaste. En 1991, il prend la tête de la division PS avant d'occuper le siège de Directeur des accélérateurs de 1994 à 2001. Depuis, Kurt Hübner représente le CERN dans les groupes de travail sur les accélérateurs du futur au sein de l'OCDE et de l'ICFA. Outre ses fonctions au CERN, Kurt Hübner a siégé dans des comités de nombreux accélérateurs internationaux, dont les conseils scientifiques de DESY ou du LAL.
En février dernier, Kurt Hübner a reçu le Prix des accélérateurs de la Société européenne de physique (EPS). Le comité de sélection avait alors estimé: « Il a montré la voie à des générations de physiciens et ingénieurs des accélérateurs, participant grandement à l'essor des accélérateurs du CERN et de nombreux autres laboratoires dans le monde. »
