Description

A search for pair production of supersymmetric particles in events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum is reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. No significant evidence for a deviation with respect to the standard model prediction was observed in data. Results are interpreted in terms of upper limits on the cross section for supersymmetric simplified model spectra, assuming R-parity conservation and with the neutralino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. If the chargino is assumed to undergo a cascade decay through sleptons, an exclusion region in the chargino-neutralino mass plane is derived, extending to chargino masses of 1120 GeV and neutralino masses of 490 GeV. Likewise, In the region where the difference between the top squark and neutralino masses fall between the W boson and top quark masses, limits extend up to 520 GeV, for the top squark mass for a model where the top squark decays via a top quark and a neutralino. In an alternative model considered, the top squark decays into a chargino and a bottom quark, with the chargino subsequently decaying into a W boson and the lightest neutralino, where top squark masses up to 540 GeV are excluded for Δm∼2(Δm_W). Lastly, slepton pair production has been considered, excluding slepton masses up to 700 GeV and neutralino masses up to 360 GeV. These results improve the ones obtained by the CMS Collaboration in previous searches for supersymmetric particle pair production in the same final state.
