Description
The main goal of this project has been to do a feasibility study on the usage of forward protons in combination with the central system of a tt decay to achieve the same information by two different measurements. One of these measurements is CMS, the other is TOTEM. TOTEM roughly consists of two arms approximately 200 meter on both sides along the beam line of the CMS detector. Both arms contain a number of Roman Pots, which are able to detect forward protons that meet certain requirements. The experimental setup discussed in this report contains two roman pots. Since TOTEM only detects the forward protons it does not suffer from as much background as CMS does. This leads to cleaner measurements, which is one of the motivations for using TOTEM. Important to stress is that the events that it measures are exclusive events, which means that the protons stay intact after the collision. If after the feasibility study it seems that TOTEM is working properly, verifications of the Standard Model (SM) or anomalous models that explain phenomena beyond the SM can be performed. One of the examples could be the profile of the invariant mass of the tt system, where one is able to compare the SM prediction to experiments. Another promise is the possibility to determine the cross section of exclusive tt production.
