Egypt receives computers from CERN

On Tuesday 22 October, CERN officially celebrated sending IT equipment to Egypt, the fifth country to benefit from such donations after Morocco, Ghana, Bulgaria and Serbia. Although no longer adequate for CERN's cutting-edge research, these machines are still suitable for less demanding applications.

In a ceremony to mark the occasion, Rolf Heuer, CERN Director-General, and Egyptian physicist Amr Radi, team leader of ASRT (Egypt’s Academy of Scientific Research and Technology) within the CMS collaboration, who has played a major part in the operation, expressed their enthusiasm for the project.
A total of 196 servers and 10 routers will be installed on the ASRT premises in Cairo, where they will be used to analyse data from the ALICE and CMS experiments.

Le mardi 22 octobre, le CERN a officiellement célébré l’envoi de matériel informatique vers l’Egypte, 5e pays après le Maroc, le Ghana, la Bulgarie et la Serbie à bénéficier de dons d’équipements informatiques. Désuets pour les recherches pointues du CERN, ces équipements restent adaptés pour des applications moins exigeantes.

Réunis pour l’occasion lors d’une cérémonie, Rolf Heuer, directeur général du CERN, et le physicien égyptien Amr Radi, chef de l’équipe ASRT (Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Egypte) au sein de la collaboration CMS et acteur majeur de l’opération, ont exprimé leur enthousiasme pour ce projet.
Au total, 196 serveurs et 10 routeurs vont ainsi être installés dans les locaux de l’ASRT, au Caire, où ils seront utilisés pour l’analyse des données des expériences ALICE et CMS.
