1. PERSONS RESIDING IN SWITZERLAND
1.1 Holders of a B, C, D or E-type carte de légitimation
For holders of B, C, D or E-type cartes de légitimation issued by the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs (Département fédéral suisse des Affaires étrangères, hereinafter called DFAE), current non-Swiss national driving licences are valid in Switzerland.
Should they so wish, holders of such driving licences may apply to the relevant roads authority in the canton where they live (Service des Automobiles et de la Navigation ; for Geneva call 022/343 02 00, website: http://www.geneve.ch/san/welcome.html, for Vaud call 021/316 82 10, website: http://www.dse.vd.ch/auto/index.html) in order to exchange their driving licence for an equivalent Swiss licence.
However, exchanges are not permitted if the driving licence was issued in a foreign country during a stay there of less than six months' duration while the person concerned was officially resident in Switzerland. In such cases a «learner-driver» permit (permis d'élève-conducteur) may be requested.
N.B. : As soon as the individual concerned ceases to hold a B, C, D or E-type carte de légitimation (e.g. after retiring from the Organization), he or she is obliged to obtain a Swiss driving licence.
1.2 Holders of other documents (attestation de fonctions)
For persons who do not hold one of the legitimation documents referred to in 1.1 above, a current non-Swiss national driving licence is valid in Switzerland for eighteen months from the date when the holder takes up residence in Switzerland.
After eighteen months of residence in Switzerland without interruptions of more than three consecutive months, a Swiss driving licence must be obtained (e.g. by exchange). This obligation notably applies to holders of attestations de fonctions issued by the DFAE.
If he/she so wishes, the person concerned may undertake the formalities for obtaining a Swiss licence before the abovementioned eighteen-month period has expired.

1.3 International driving licences
Holders of driving licences drafted in a language other than one of the official Swiss languages (German, French, Italian, Romansch) or English are recommended to obtain an international driving licence. This may be obtained from the relevant roads authority in the canton where you live (see details in 1.1 above).
2. PERSONS RESIDING OUTSIDE SWITZERLAND
For people living outside Switzerland but driving there on an occasional basis, current national driving licences are valid in Switzerland.

1.1 Titulaire d'une carte de légitimation de type B, C, D ou E
Un permis de conduire national non suisse en cours de validité est reconnu en Suisse si son titulaire est en possession d'une carte de légitimation de type B, C, D ou E délivrée par le Département fédéral suisse des Affaires étrangères (ci-après «DFAE»).
S'il le souhaite, le titulaire d'un tel permis de conduire peut demander au service compétent en matière de circulation routière dans son canton de résidence (Service des Automobiles et de la Navigation ; Genève : tél. 022/343 02 00, pages Web http://www.geneve.ch/san/welcome.html ; Vaud : tél. 021/316 82 10, pages Web http://www.dse.vd.ch/auto/index.html) l'échange de son permis contre un permis suisse équivalent.
Toutefois, l'échange n'est pas possible si l'intéressé, dont la résidence est en Suisse, a obtenu un permis de conduire dans un pays étranger dans lequel il a séjourné pendant moins de six mois. Dans ce cas, un permis d'élève-conducteur peut être demandé.
N.B. : L'intéressé qui n'est plus au bénéfice d'une carte de légitimation de type B, C, D ou E (par exemple, après son départ à la retraite) doit obtenir un permis de conduire suisse.
1.2 Titulaire d'un autre document (attestation de fonctions)
Dans le cas des personnes qui ne sont pas titulaires d'une des cartes de légitimation mentionnées au paragraphe 1.1 ci-dessus, un permis de conduire national non suisse en cours de validité est reconnu en Suisse pendant dix-huit mois à compter de la prise de résidence en Suisse.
Après dix-huit mois de résidence en Suisse sans interruption de plus de trois mois consécutifs, l'obtention d'un permis suisse est obligatoire (par exemple, par voie d'échange). Cette obligation s'applique notamment aux titulaires d'une attestation de fonctions délivrée par le DFAE.
S'il le souhaite, l'intéressé peut entreprendre les démarches pour obtenir un permis suisse avant expiration du délai de dix-huit mois précité.

1.3 Permis de conduire international
Il est recommandé aux détenteurs de permis de conduire, libellés dans une langue autre que les langues officielles suisses (allemand, français, italien et romanche) ou l'anglais, d'obtenir un permis de conduire international. Un tel permis peut être délivré par le service compétent en matière de circulation routière du canton où l'intéressé a sa résidence (cf. paragraphe 1.1 ci-dessus).
2. PERSONNE RESIDANT HORS DE SUISSE
En ce qui concerne les personnes qui ne résident pas en Suisse mais qui y circulent temporairement, un permis de conduire national ou international en cours de validité est reconnu en Suisse.
